It is about recognizing sport as a profession

Mikkel Larsen

When I resigned as national coach in Danish Athletics in 2017, it wasn't to pressure the federation to find the money, but because I didn't want to continue. I thought the working conditions were unreasonable and unrealistic in relation to the goals we had, and I had no expectation that it would change. But when the offer for a full-time position was presented to me approximately three years ago, I naturally accepted it.

Since I started as a national coach in 2004, I have always had other jobs on the side. When we finally got to the other side of the Rio Olympics in 2016, where we achieved what no one thought was possible with Sara Slott's silver medal in the 400m hurdles, and still there was no more professional setup coming out of it, it seemed impossible to dream further. We had already done it against all odds.
